About This Deadline

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) determines your eligibility for federal student loans, grants (including the Pell Grant), and work-study. Submitting the FAFSA early increases your chances of receiving grant funding, which does not need to be repaid.

The FAFSA opens October 1 and closes June 30 federally, but individual states and colleges may have earlier deadlines. For the 2024–2025 academic year, the priority deadline for many schools is January 15 or February 15. Submitting before the college deadline ensures you're considered for institutional aid, scholarships, and grants.

To complete the FAFSA: 1. Create a Federal Student Aid ID at studentaid.gov 2. Gather tax returns (yours and parents' if dependent) 3. Collect financial documents (bank statements, investment accounts, mortgage details) 4. Answer questions about family size, income, assets, and educational plans 5. List up to 10 colleges to receive your information

The FAFSA is free and available at fafsa.gov. Be wary of "FAFSA preparation services" charging fees — the official FAFSA is always free.

The information you provide is used to calculate your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), which colleges use to determine financial aid packages. Earlier submission can result in more favorable aid packages, especially if schools have limited grant funds.

If your family's income or assets change significantly after filing, contact the college's financial aid office for a professional judgment review, which may increase your aid eligibility.

What If You Miss It?

Missing the FAFSA deadline:

- May be ineligible for federal grants (Pell Grant, Federal Work-Study)

- Colleges may have exhausted institutional grant budgets

- Only left with loans, which must be repaid with interest

- May need to consider private loans at higher rates

- Delay in receiving financial aid awards and enrollment
