How we source our data.
CalcFi publishes economic data pulled directly from primary US government sources. We do not interpret the data, give advice, or editorialize the numbers. Our job is to make the numbers easy to find, cite, and use in a calculator. This page explains exactly where every number comes from.
Who publishes CalcFi
CalcFi is built and maintained by Jere Salmisto, a software engineer based in Helsinki, Finland. CalcFi is not a registered investment advisor, broker-dealer, or financial planner. We do not give personalized financial advice.
What we do: publish public government economic data, and build free calculators that work with that data. That's it.
Primary data sources
Every data point on CalcFi links to its primary source. You can always verify our numbers against the original government dataset.
- Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED)Interest rates, mortgage rates, inflation, employment, money supply
- US Treasury — Fiscal DataTreasury yields, debt, auction results, I-bonds
- Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)Employment, wages, CPI components
- Energy Information Administration (EIA)Gas prices by state, electricity rates, natural gas
- FDIC BankFind + National RatesCD rates, savings APY, money market rates
- CoinGeckoCryptocurrency spot prices and historical data
- World Bank Open DataGlobal economic indicators
How we update the data
- Daily series (Treasury yields, Fed funds, FX, crypto): refreshed every hour during US market hours.
- Weekly series (30-year mortgage rate, FDIC national rate caps): refreshed daily; typically updates when the primary source publishes new data mid-week.
- Monthly series (CPI, PCE, unemployment): refreshed daily; new values appear typically the second Tuesday of each month when BLS releases new data.
- Quarterly and annual series: refreshed daily; update cadence follows the primary source.
Every data point shows its last-updated timestamp. We only update our published value when the primary source actually changes, to avoid spoofing freshness.
Calculation methodology
Every calculator on CalcFi shows its formula. Tax calculations cite the relevant IRS publication or state revenue department rule. Loan and mortgage calculations use the standard amortization formula documented by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Retirement calculations cite SSA or IRS contribution limits for the current tax year.
We do not use proprietary models, AI-generated formulas, or third-party calculations we haven't verified against the primary source.
Corrections
If you find a factual error or a calculation discrepancy against a primary source, email corrections@calcfi.app. We review every correction within 48 hours. Confirmed errors are fixed immediately and the affected page's “Last updated” timestamp reflects the correction.
AI Insight Engine
CalcFi's AI-powered Insight Engine analyzes your calculator results and generates educational commentary. Calculations run in your browser. If you opt into AI analysis, your inputs are sent to our AI inference provider (Groq) to generate the explanation, with no name, account, IP, or persistent identifier collected. Every AI analysis is optional. AI-generated insights are educational only, not financial advice, and are designed to help you understand what your numbers mean.
AI-generated content on CalcFi is clearly labeled as such and is subject to the same compliance standards as all calculator results: no specific securities recommendations, no tax-strategy claims, and no personalized financial advice. Every AI insight includes a disclaimer affirming it is for educational purposes only.
The AI model running the Insight Engine may make errors, misinterpret your situation, or suggest actions that don't apply to you. Always verify AI-generated insights against primary sources and consult a licensed advisor before making financial decisions.
No financial advice
CalcFi publishes data and runs calculators. We do not provide personalized financial advice, investment recommendations, tax advice, or legal advice. Anything on this site is general information only, not a recommendation to buy, sell, hold, or act on any financial instrument.
Before making a financial decision, consult a licensed advisor who knows your full situation.
